My wife and I started buying Charlie’s Best Bread back in 2008…..soon after we moved here from Australia. The bread really is the best bread out there. In the first few years we mainly bought it at Jimbo’s Naturally or the Farmers Markets in Hillcrest / La Jolla. Sometimes we drove to Charlie’s original bakery in Pacific Beach to pick up a few loaves but there wasn’t much going on back then. It was just a little bakery and retail shop with no sandwiches or decent coffee on offer.
When we moved house to Solana Beach about 4 years ago we would buy it at the local Jimbo’s in Carmel Valley but they didn’t stock all the varieties we wanted. So about 18 months ago we headed back to the bakery in PB and were surprised to see it had been completely remodeled. The space inside had been opened up with room for dining tables and chairs plus a long espresso bar had been added. We were very impressed but didn’t have time to stick around.
After buying a half dozen nice looking ciabattas we left but decided a return trip was on the cards. So recently we decided to head over here and buy a stack of bread. We walked in around 12.30pm and the bakery looked pretty much the same as almost 12 months ago when we first saw the re-model. Much more room now plus the tables and chairs inside are great for relaxing with a nice coffee. A lovely young employee named Rachel greeted us soon after we walked in.
We mentioned straight away that we could see no Sunflower Bread……sold out earlier replied Rachel. Oh well there was a stack of other bread to choose from so we loaded up our shopping bag with 4 loaves…..2 x Nine Whole Grains, 1 x Spinach Feta cheese and 1 x Cranberry Orange Walnut. We knew they added an espresso bar in the re-model but wasn’t sure on lunch options. We chose a couple of Ham & Brie on Italian Torpedo Rolls and 2 hot lattes.
Charlie’s use Cafe Moto coffee beans which are pretty decent. Our creamy lattes tasted really good and the sandwiches very fresh….nice ham, creamy brie. Fernando the charming owner came over to have a chat with us. It’s the first time we have met him. He has certainly made some great improvements in recent years to many aspects of the business. In the future we will make a regular trip over here to buy our bread and have a nice lunch. We love it !
