My wife and I headed downtown on a Saturday to check out 2 new eateries in South Park to grab some lunch and buy some fresh baked Focaccia Bread, Ciabattas & Panini Rolls. Of course we are very interested in anything that entrepreneurial restauranteur Matteo Cattaneo has got his talented hands on. We have dined many times at his various Buona Forchetta locations all over San Diego. Our first stop was a cute cafe called Enoteca Buona Forchetta.

This where we had a sensational lunch and ran into Courtney who runs social media for Buona Forchetta. After lunch we walked what felt like 10 miles on a very hot day to Matteo where we bumped into Matteo Cattaneo himself as we were about to cross the street to his restaurant. We had a lovely chat and my wife took pics of us together. My wife liked the look of the breakfast menu so we made plans to come here early for breakfast the following Saturday.

Of course it’s a bit of a hike from Solana Beach ( 23 miles ) so we didn’t turn up until 9.45am. And somehow in South Park we miraculously snaffled a parking spot without a meter straight across from Matteo. The restaurant was very packed out when we walked in….not to our surprise because we had seen diners salivating over their delicious looking meals the previous Saturday. A lovely smiling lady named Joanne…( the restaurant GM we found out later ) handed us menus while we stood in line.

So it’s a stand in line to place your order and they will bring everything to your table model. We were served rather quickly…..the line moved fast. We ordered 2 x double shot Lattes with 2% milk, 1 x Fresh Squeezed Orange Juice, 1 x Cheesy Porcini Mushroom on Toast and 1 x Classic Eggs Benedict ( hard poached eggs ) and paid by credit card. While near the service counter we checked out what varieties of fresh baked goods were on the shelf and had a lovely chat with Evelyn ( Floor Manager ).

We needed more of their yummy bread but would wait til after our breakfast before choosing. Our Lattes arrived courtesy of barista / server Baran and looked fabulous. My big glass of Fresh Squeezed Orange Juice hit the table soon after. A bubbly server named Valentina delivered our breakfast dishes. Gee they looked great……just $12 & $11 each and substantial serves too. My Classic Eggs Benedict tasted absolutely perfect…..and the roasted potatoes / mixed veggies was divine. My wife loves Porcini Mushrooms and there was a big stack of them sitting on top of her huge slice of Italian Country Bread toast…2 big fat slices of fresh red Tomatoes and a side of delicious roasted potatoes / mixed veggies.

I know when my wife is really enjoying a meal. Our double shot Lattes tasted rich, flavorsome & invigorating. My Fresh Squeezed Orange Juice tasted sweet and natural as it should. All this culinary enjoyment while sitting in the middle of a large airy dining room packed with happy diners…many of whom were here for the first time. Our amazing breakfast cost us $32 before tax & tip and remember this is a non-profit restaurant which helps school children in need.

We headed to the service counter to buy a bunch of bread & stuff…..4 x Focaccia, 2 x Ciabattas, 1 x Filone ( Italian Country Bread ), 2 x Almond Croissants, 2 x Butter Croissants and a Spinach & Cheese Croissant ( which I had later in the afternoon and it tasted superb ). And my wife picked out a few delicious Majani Chocolates. All the while we were there we could see the owner / head chef Matteo busily directing proceedings in the kitchen. I gave him the thumbs up…good job mate !
