Byron Bay . . holiday mecca for the rich & famous and a lovely watering hole for the locals. And don’t forget Bay Kebabs who knock out some of the tastiest Kebabs on the planet ! My wife and I were on vacation in Australia for a couple of weeks not long back to catch up with family and friends. We were flying all over the place but we just had to spend a few days in our beloved Byron Bay which we have missed heaps since moving to California in 2006.
After checking into our digs at Byron Pacific Apartments in Lawson Street early on Friday evening we went for a cruise in our rental car around downtown Byron Bay to see what had changed in the 8 years since we were last here. We noticed a bit of new stuff and some missing old stuff. The next morning we hit the Byron Beach Cafe across the street at 7.30am for breakfast. It was alright but not the same as back in the good old days when we used to have the “Big Breakfast”.
We drove downtown after brekkie because we needed to pick up some supplies at the Woolies supermarket and then have lunch a bit later. A cute cafe called Mokha On Lawson beckoned us in for lattes and they tasted great too. We walked around a bit looking at a few gift shops up near the Beach Hotel and even spotted a couple of cool Holden V8 Utes parked on Jonson Street. When it was time for lunch we headed straight to Bay Kebabs where we ordered a couple of fully loaded Kebabs . . gee they had Sweet Chili sauce and Hot Chili sauce just like I remembered back in Brissie ( Brisbane ). Top service and our wrapped up Kebabs were huge and excellent value for a tourist town like Byron Bay.
We sat outside on a bench and watched the tourists walk by while we feasted on our delicious Kebabs. We did a bunch of other stuff while we are in Byron Bay . . bought some Aussie meat pies at Byron Bay Hotbread Kitchen, walked up to the Cape Byron Lighthouse, picked up some good American IPA beers at the Great Northern Hotel, had dinner at the beautiful Beach Hotel but seriously our awesome tasting Kebabs from Bay Kebabs were the highlight for me !
