This was our first ever visit to this local Thai place. A few days ago we were having a chat about local eateries with the owner of a well known brew pub in Del Mar. We mentioned we liked Thai food and our friend said he thought Similan Thai in Solana Beach had terrific food and great lunch specials. We looked up the online reviews and they were pretty decent but you can’t beat the personal recommendation of someone you know well . . and who has very good taste.
We walked in the front entrance just after midday. A very polite and charming hostess named Katie came to the front desk and greeted us. After being shown to a comfortable table by Katie we were handed the menus to peruse. The Lunch Special menu had a good range of meals priced from $9.95 to $15.95. We decided to order a Crispy Spring Rolls appetizer for starters and my wife chose the Pra Ram with Chicken & White Rice. I decided on Panang Curry with Beef & White Rice.
Interestingly it says at the bottom of the Lunch Special menu that everything is served medium spicy unless requested otherwise. Katie brought us tall glasses of water but I wanted something interesting to drink but not alcohol. Katie made me a special Thai Iced Tea which tasted very unique and very nice . . and I am not a tea drinker. Katie brought out our bowls of soup . . Creamed Rice / Chicken Broth combo which tasted very nice. Our Crispy Spring Rolls appetizer came out and we dipped them in the sweet plum sauce. . . very nice ! Our spectacular looking meals came out courtesy of Katie who was single handedly running the restaurant . . a very talented young lady.
It’s amazing what they can fit on one of the long plates . . our mains, a mountain of White Rice, a bowl of House Salad, 2 Crispy Spring Rolls plus sweet Plum Sauce. My wife loved her meal but of course couldn’t get through it so a take home box was required. On the other hand I can get through a pretty good size meal particularly if it tastes great and my Panang Curry was terrific ! We were very happy with our delicious meals but even more impressed with the wonderful attention from Katie our server !
